NC 4H and the Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) at North Carolina State University co-host NC FoodCorps in their shared mission of supporting future food system leaders and developing sustainable, fair, local food systems.
Who: In the state, FoodCorps partners with county Cooperative Extension agencies, non-profit organizations, and school nutrition services to tap the local knowledge of folks already on the ground doing great work.
When: The FoodCorps team first came together in California on Earth Day 2009, the day President Obama signed the Kennedy Serve America Act into law.
What: FoodCorp is creating a future in which all our nation’s children––regardless of class, race, or geography––know what healthy food is, care where it comes from, and eat it every day.
Where: Food Corps serves communities all over the US. Click here to read about sites in NC.
Why: Over one-fifth of our children are living in poverty, and 27% of kids in North Carolina are designated as food insecure. FoodCorps recognizes that in order for kids to be healthy and well fed, communities must be engaged to address issues of education and access.
How: From the beginning, FoodCorps drew strong support from the communities we are now serving. Monthly open conference calls each attracted 45-190 participants. An initial 40-person Planning Summit grew into 300 volunteers actively participating in developing the current model.
